How to Write Spectacular Blogs to Gain Organic Traffic
A Simplified Guide for Business Owners
If you’re here, you’ve started your own business. Deciding to take the leap into entrepreneurship is terrifying in itself. What’s more terrifying is not knowing where to go next. Marketing is up there on your list of priorities. You’re not ready to pay for ads, so you’ve looked into organic traffic strategies.
And it’s overwhelming.
You see countless recommendations to take courses and learn SEO strategies. Others say you should hire someone to do it for you.
While hiring someone who’s an expert isn’t a bad idea – you might not be there yet. If you haven’t nailed down your ideal customer and your offer, you should focus on those details first.
Boosting organic traffic to your website doesn’t have to be a daunting experience. There are several steps you can take to make sure your website is being seen. And ensure you’re driving the right people to your offer.
But first – let’s go over organic traffic and what it actually means.
What Is Organic Traffic?
Organic traffic is unpaid traffic that results from typing a word, phrase, or question into a search engine. If you’re paying for ads on social media or search engines – that’s paid traffic.
Let’s get one thing straight – investing in organic traffic is necessary for almost all businesses.
And one of the most effective ways to increase organic traffic is by posting blogs on your website.
If you think blogs are out of style, consider these points:
One of the first places people search for information is Google.
Almost every question or phrase you type into Google is answered with a blog.
Every person has problems. And they’ll be looking on Google for answers to those issues.
Google has over 8.5 billion searches every day – that’s a lot of people looking for answers [1].
And as long as we’re talking about numbers – companies with blogs produce an average of 67% more leads than those without blogs [2].
Don’t write blogs off. There are countless benefits to blogging that a lot of business owners overlook.
Why Are Blogs Important for Increasing Organic Traffic?
Blogs are the gift that keeps on giving. Posting blogs is a long-term strategy that doesn’t produce immediate results. But if you consistently post blogs about topics that are valuable to your target audience – and even other leaders in your industry – you’ll eventually see a monetary return, as well as a boost to your credibility.
Blogs are a worthwhile investment for your business. But you have to optimize your blogs if they’re going to increase your organic traffic.
How Do You Optimize Your Blogs to Increase Organic Traffic?
If you’ve invested in digital marketing for your business, you’ve heard of search engine optimization (SEO).
SEO is what makes your content rank on Google and other search engines – leading to an increase in organic traffic. It can also be beneficial on social media platforms if you use keywords in your profile and posts. But let’s talk about how SEO works in blogs.
After you’ve completed market and customer research, you can move on to keyword research.
I personally prefer using the SEO tool Ubersuggest and the Google extension Keywords Everywhere. Using the insight you’ve gained from your research, start by thinking of a relevant keyword. One that your target customer would type into Google.
An example is a holistic health and wellness coach in the women’s health space who helps women with painful periods control their hormones naturally. You could start with “painful periods” as your keyword. But before you select your keyword, use one of the tools mentioned above to determine if your keyword is valuable and if you have a possibility of ranking for it.
Ubersuggest will tell you the number of monthly searches for your keyword. It will also tell you the cost per click (CPC), SEO difficulty, and how many backlinks the top-ranking pages for that keyword have on average.
And I love Ubersuggest, because it tells you what all these metrics mean. So if you’re not a marketing guru – don’t be discouraged.
If the number of monthly searches for your keyword is zero – that means nobody is searching for that specific keyword. So you won’t gain organic traffic if you use it. There might be searches for a related keyword, so you have to dig deeper in that case.
There’s more to SEO than keywords, so let’s talk about the backend of your blogs.
How Can You Optimize the Backend of Your Blogs for SEO?
The backend of your website is prime real estate for SEO. You can optimize fields such as the webpage URL, the meta description, and alt text for images. If you skip these steps, you’ll miss out on organic traffic.
Let’s use the painful periods keyword as an example again. Your URL for this blog might be “theholisticcoach.com/howtofixyourpainfulperiods”. Your meta-description might be something along the lines of: “I’m a certified holistic women’s health coach. My Heal Your Painful Periods program consists of five workshops that will give you the knowledge and tools you need to fix your painful periods naturally without hormonal birth control”.
And if you add images to your blog, you can add alt text with your keyword as well.
Don’t skip these steps when optimizing your blogs for SEO – it could be the difference between showing up on the first page of Google or the tenth page. And showing up on the tenth page means lower visibility and lower return on investment.
Don’t Fall off the Ends of the Blogging-Verse
Blogging is a long-term investment that pays off handsomely. Google’s algorithm has gone through many changes, but blogs that spread relevant and accurate content have benefitted. Google also favors long-form content, so your blogs should be over 1,000 words. Make sure your blogs are actually increasing organic traffic to your website.
